Country Skis Bindings
Country Skis Bindings

How do I know about these xcountry skis?
I was given some used cross country skis and would like to start using them. They don't have bindings on them, and I'm pretty sure they've been in a basement for years. I have skied before, but I always rented skis. How do you tell if they are OK to use and not too crappy, and can I put new style of bindings on them?
thanks!!
Wendy
They're "Karhu Titans". With little Salomon toe clip bindings. I actually forgot that they had bindings on them. I am 5'10, how long should they be? I will try to post a pic ASAP. They are also pretty flexy...I assume that is important, when back to back they only touch at the top and bottom, and are resting about 3 inches apart in the middle. Hope that helps! Thanks!!
Post a pic or give the brand and model...I'll be able to give you a better idea.
Edit: I'm gonna chance a guess they are from the early 80s. Karhu bought the Titan ski line in the late 1970s and sold them as Karhu-Titan through the 80s. "Titan" is most likely not the style or model. I know Karhu dropped the "Titan" part of their name a long time ago.
I can say that you'll most likely be able to have newer bindings put on the skis. From time to time I would get someone who wanted to switch from 3-pin bindings to a step-in NNN or SNS binding. I never had any problems mounting new bindings on older skis. Only once did I have a ski that the new bindings didn't cover the old holes, so there might be some cosmetic problems, but as long as the base is in good shape and the skis still have some camber, why not give it a shot?
Newer skis will be lighter and easier to use, but a good set of XC skis will last for years. Since you probably want new bindings, just take the skis to the shop when you go binding shopping. Any credible XC dealer will give you the straight dirt about your skis.
Karhu-Titan is Karhu's operating name in Spain, but I do not believe they are making skis under that name. It's simply just "Karhu" and I'm pretty sure they make most of them in Canada.
